What can I substitute for a can of diced tomatoes?
As you can see in my recipe directions below, I drained a can of diced tomatoes to get rid of all the juices. What’s left are juicy and delicious tomato pieces.
Of course a great substitute for canned diced tomatoes are garden fresh tomatoes, for example if you have some leftovers laying around in your garden use fresh tomatoes for good measure.
Keep in mind that you always have to dice and core your tomatoes, but peel them according to your preferences and taste.
Reasons why you need to try this Tomato Gravy
It has savory and tangy flavors that are seriously out of this world amazing.
Made with pantry staples that you probably have on hand, it is also truly an amazing tomato sauce that is flavorful and so satisfying just like my Spaghetti Sauce, Pomodoro Sauce or Arrabbiata Sauce.
The use of diced tomatoes and tomato paste makes the result taste aromatic and bold like in a restaurant. But you have the recipe and can make everything easily at home.
Look at my step by step pictures, because something might be familiar to you to start: my preparation of this tomato gravy recipe starts with a roux same as with Mornay Sauce.
What you need for this Tomato Gravy recipe
Butter and non dairy creamer are used for a rich and creamy base, along with vegetable broth for extra flavor. Combined with flour they give the gravy a thick and comforting texture.
The star ingredient of this tomato gravy are the drained can of diced tomatoes and paste.
However, what brings more flavor to the maximum: garlic and onion powder.
What can vegans use instead of heavy cream?
- A mix of non dairy milk and oil
- Mixing cornstarch and again any non dairy milk that you like
- Coconut cream, but it will have a coconut after taste
- Tofu and soy milk, yet keep in mind silken tofu is easier to mix.
- Cashews + 1/4 cup water for cashew cream. This works well with any other nuts you can imagine.
Heavy cream substitutes
No matter what you are cooking or making these heavy cream substitutes are great:
- Greek yoghurt plus milk. It will also work with dairy free yoghurt.
- Milk and butter
- Sour cream, or cream cheese and milk
