The flavor is amazing, but the preparation is so effortless coming together in 30 minutes. We are talking about restaurant quality that everyone will know once tried, better you will be totally surprised it is vegan. A keeper that the whole family will enjoy and picky eaters will always come back for more.

Sliced Stromboli are arranged in a round serving dish with a small bowl of tomato dipping sauce in the middle.

I tell you I’m all about short cut ingredients in my pantry. So for me a premade pizza dough is great because it saves me a good amount of time.

What is the difference between Stromboli and calzone

Both are delicious and often almost use the same ingredients.

The main difference is the size and shape. While a calzone is folded in half, a Stromboli is rolled as you know from a burrito and then for convenience sliced to make serving easier.

Ingredients of this Stromboli assembled on a wooden board.

The tomato sauce is mixed with Italian herbs and garlic in a small mixing bowl.

Why you need to try this easy Stromboli recipe

It is so easy to make and the result will be so good.

No need to make a Stromboli dough – we use premade dough to save a lot of time.

A jar of marinara is the sauce base so this is really handy. Fresh garlic adds a lot of flavor.

Step by step pictures show you exactly how to roll a Stromboli so you know it will turn out amazing.

Prepared pizza dough is spread out on a baking dish, then the tomato sauce is spread over it.

What you need for this Stromboli recipe

I keep it really simple so I added classic flavors that you know and love from pizza, but feel free to use anything you want like my Sugar Free BBQ SauceRanch Dressing, or Alfredo Sauce, fill with paprika, olives, pineapple. There are so many amazing options.

  • Pizza dough
  • Olive oil
  • Marinara
  • Garlic
  • Italian Herbs
  • Vegan mozzarella and parmesan
  • Vegan pepperoni

After adding another layer of vegan cheese, the dough is rolled up.

The rolled up Stromboli is finally brushed with olive oil and then baked golden in the oven.

How to make Stromboli

Preheat oven to 360°F. Roll out pizza dough on a baking greased with olive oil or lined with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, mix marinara with Italian herbs and pressed garlic. Give 3 Tbsp of the marinara (reserve rest for serving) over pizza dough, top with 3/4 of the vegan mozzarella and vegan parmesan, followed by all of vegan pepperoni. Finish with remaining vegan cheeses on top.

Finally roll as tightly as possibly, brush with olive oil.

Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Allow to cool down for 10 minutes before serving and slicing. Serve with marinara, if you like.

I like to serve this fresh from the oven and hot, so leftovers will work, but seriously this Stromboli is so much more delicious fresh.

Tips and tricks

Make ahead: you can roll and prepare all the fillings the night before and stick it in the fridge to bake the next day.

If you like a chunkier tomato sauce try this Spaghetti Sauce

Fresh or frozen pizza dough will work, bread dough will work as well.

Thanks for suggesting such a treat, Florian! It was easy to make and tasted fantastic. My kids were like, "Is this healthy?" cause it sure is good LOL. I told the kids they can choose it as their birthday meal if they want. Gotta treat ourselves sometime! The dough in the middle layers was undercooked, so next time I will bake 20 minutes, then loosely cover the top with foil and bake 12 minutes more. Oh, and it took more like 5 oz. pepperoni to cover the dough. Can't wait to make it again. Thanks again

Thanks for your great feedback and suggestions, Eric! Happy to hear it was a hit with your kids. The filling and baking time of course depends on the chosen pizza dough size.
