I am truly always into something comforting simmering in a great sauce like this Cheeseburger Soup, my Broccoli Bake, the Southern Mac and Cheese, or my Baked Ziti

Now this Salisbury Steak recipe will be a favorite for everyone. You will be surprised how good this tastes, just like in a restaurant, but the preparation comes together in a breeze. It is so easy.

Some recipes use onions. That is amazing and seriously yummy, but it does take a bit longer to caramelize onions for the final result. I keep it really simple and use almost the same ingredients in the patties and gravy.

Rich in flavor: the sauce and patties are really meant for each other.

You can see that you can make this gourmet meal straightforward with step by step pictures. Saves a lot of time and guarantees a great result.

The steak sauce is a keeper for many things and so good. You will find yourself using it often.

What is the difference between a Salisbury steak and a hamburger steak?

You can tell a Salisbury Steak is made with more robust ingredients like breadcrumbs, lots of seasonings, sauce and so versatile served with Garlic Mashed Potatoes or pasta.

While on the other hand hamburger steak often only contains a pinch salt and pepper, served on a bun.

Vegan beef patties are prepared and fired in a mix of butter and olive oil.

What you need for this Salisbury steak recipe:

Vegan ground beef — this is really close to the real deal and taste so great while having the right texture.

Dairy free butter and olive oil: they both make the flavors seriously so delicious. The butter adds a lot of buttery flavor and makes any dish comforting and rich that doesn’t reach any oil along. Olive oil gives an intensive aroma which is amazing together with the buttery flavors. Also oil has a higher smoke point than butter. Both together taste so good and don’t raise the smoke point.

Tamari sauce and ketchup are a really great alternative to Worchester sauce. You have the great umami flavor with sweet notes from ketchup delicious.

Mushrooms add a great texture and really compliment the umami flavors.

Mushroom slices are sautéed in vegan butter.

Breadcrumbs: have a great function as binder for more substance for the patties.

Vegetable broth: makes a great base for the gravy.

Mustard: compliments the other ingredients greatly and make it tastier than ever.

Garlic, onion powder, smoked paprika and Italian herbs are what it takes to make a great seasoning for each bite of this Salisbury Steak, yum.

How to make Salisbury Steak

Start with the patties.

Combine vegan ground beef with garlic, onion powder, mustard, smoked paprika, ketchup, tamari, Italian Herbs. Then season with a pinch of salt and pepperoni mix in the breadcrumbs.

Form 3 equally 3/4 inch thick patties from the mixture. Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil with 2 Tbsp dairy free butter in a pan. Then add patties and fry then for 3 minutes from each side. When done, remove them and set them aside. Leave fat in the pan because it holds the flavors.

The prefried vegan steaks are added into a pan with the gravy and basted with it.

For the gravy: Heat remaining butter then add mushrooms with the garlic and onion powder. Cook them until browned. Next mix 2 tsp vegetable broth with 1 tsp cornstarch and set aside.

Add remaining vegetable broth and ketchup, mustard, smoked paprika to the pan. Bring to a simmer and whisk in the corn starch slurry. When thickened, season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Now it is time to return the patties to the gravy, and baste gravy with a spoon over patties. Finally, cook the Salisbury Steak for 5 minutes more, then serve hot on plates, yum.

Freezer instructions and storage

I find the patties and gravy taste great fresh, but leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 3 days. You can simply reheat them in the microwave.

Further, it is possible to freeze Salisbury Steak for around 2 months put in a freezer friendly container, cooked or uncooked.

I would suggest to make the gravy right before and freezing it separate from the patties.

My husband and I really enjoy this recipe. I do, however, have questions about the gravy, I experiment with a couple of ingredients because they are not listed in the ingredients list. The directions reference using smoked paprika and tamari, but the ingredients list doesn't include these, so I'm unsure of the amounts. The ingredients also include mustard, but it's not included in the directions. Could you clarify these for me? Thank you!

What do you suggest for the amount of smoked paprika and the tamari in the gravy? Mine turned out too salty. Otherwise loved it. Thx!
