There is something about Patty Melt. So comforting, satisfying and really good.

I can assure caramelized onions are really the star of the show. These take some time to make – for me they were done after 20 minutes, but your time investment is really worth it.

You won’t need any sauce in a Patty Melt recipe, because the flavors are so simple: caramelized onions, burger patty and lots of cheesy goodness.

Ingredients needed to make Patty Melt are collected before cooking on a wooden board.

Reasons to make this Patty Melt

Better than any hamburger, a Patty Melt is even more delicious and even so easy to prepare.

Caramelized onions add so much flavor, because that is all what this recipe needs. No extra ketchup, mayo or other sauce.

Once you smell how it comes fresh from the pan, you know you will come back to making it often.

I’ll show you step by step pictures so you know exactly what it is all about.

What you need for this Patty Melt Recipe

Burger patty is made from vegan ground beef, soy sauce, ketchup, garlic, onion powder, and smoked paprika. To give them an even more amazing flavor, I cook them in dairy free butter. Oil will work as well, but I do really find butter is even more delicious.

For making the caramelized onions you will need onions, dairy free butter and olive oil. Here, the oil is added, because we don’t want to burn the onions. Caramelizing does take at least 20 minutes.

You can use any bread that you like. I find a rustic bread is great and delicious as it adds even more flavor.

Non dairy cheese: you can use any you like. Just keep in mind for 3 sandwiches you will need 6 slices.

How to make Patty Melt

Prepare caramelized onions

In a pan heat 2 Tbs butter and oil.

When hot, add onions and season them with a pinch of salt. Reduce the heat to medium.

Caramelize onions for 20 minutes. At that point for me the onions are really beautifully caramelized. Depending on how large your onion slices are, it could take a bit longer.

Prepare patties

In a bowl combine vegan ground beef, ketchup, soy sauce, garlic onion powder, smoked paprika and a pinch salt of pepper. Mix and form flat, thin patties. Keep in mind to form them similarly to the size and form to your bread slices.

Heat 2 Tbs butter in a pan. Fry patties for 2.5 minutes from each side until properly cooked.

Remove from pan and set aside.

Cook sandwich

Start and smear a little butter on each slice of your bread. Heat a pan and start with placing the bottom slice butter-side down in it.

Next add cheese on the bread followed by a patty, caramelized onions and again cheese.

Now put the top slice of bread with the buttered side up on your Patty Melts.

Cook bread from each side for 2 minutes. Slice patty melt diagonally, and serve immediately.
