Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Grilled Cheese Sandwich is what is truly the most delicious and comforting meal that you can expect. Easy to make, melty, gooey and always a winner in my book that once tried no one can get enough of it. There is something absolutely evolving about 2 slices of bread and melted cheese, because it is truly timeless and never will go out of fashion.

Mayo vs butter for grilled cheese sandwich

I do not reinvent the wheel or do anything special, but let me tell you after trial and error I find the ultimate formula for the best grilled cheese sandwich.

Mayo is the most amazing ingredient. I use it to smear it on my bread and for cooking there isn’t any butter involved. Butter has a delicious flavor for sure, but after using mayo I found out two things:

First, the sandwich has a lot of more flavor. It was nice with butter, but nothing compared to the mayo. Also it has the same amazing richness with mayo which in my gusto is important for this kind of sandwiches.

Second, the texture! The crunch was truly so great. Cook the sandwich in mayo, leaving out the butter makes a better crusty texture for the sandwich. Butter is wonderful, yet it can’t make that crust, because your sandwich will be turn out greasy (where’s the crunch?). Mayo makes seriously a better, more delicious texture of your sandwich than it will turn out with butter.

You would expect fancy ingredients, expensive bread, yet let me tell you, use any bread, cheese and mayo that you like and want.

First step in making Grilled Cheese Sandwich is spreading metal on the bread slices.

Reasons to love this Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Warm, gooey, cheesy, warming and comforting. What’s not to love about that?

Grilled Cheese Sandwich is budget friendly and really inexpensive, yet filling. It is a crowd pleaser that you can make in no time for the whole family.

So much flavor, friends you would guess flavor comes into play alone from the cheese. That is right, but I use vegan mayo and that elevates your sandwich from yummy to perfection. More flavor than butter and it makes an outstanding texture, (know the crunch).

It takes 3 ingredients to make an amazing sandwich. Nothing less, or more.

What you need for this Grilled Cheese Sandwich recipe

Cheese: you can use slices, grated or a mix. I keep it really simple and use slices of non dairy cheese. You can use a more stronger, or a milder flavor.

Bread: I go for white bread, but sourdough or any other bread is great, too.

Mayo: I use vegan mayo which is really rich, satisfying and always delicious. It makes a wonderful crust and adds so much flavor to our sandwich in no time.

How to make Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Heat a skillet on low heat. It should not be too hot, otherwise your bread will burn while the cheese has not melted yet.

Start by smearing 2 Tbs of mayo on your bread slices and put two of them into your warm skillet with the mayo side down. Add another Tbs of mayo to your bread slices in the skillet, followed by cheese, then close sandwich. Mayo-side down again, finally top with remaining mayo.

Cook sandwich from each side for around 4 minutes, flip.

Continue until bread is nicely browned and cheese is fully melted. Slice diagonal and serve the Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

A second layer of bread slices tops the sandwich.

Tips and tricks

As I mentioned above, cook on low temperature so that the bread can slowly brown and the cheese has time to fully melt.

Use a mayo with high fat content. No fat reduced or light mayonnaise.

What to serve? You can serve it up with Spaghetti Sauce, soups like the Creamy Potato Soup or Gnocchi Soup, or salads such as Spinach Salad, or Tuna Salad

If you are more into butter instead of mayo (I get it, it’s more classic) use the same amount of butter for the mayo.
