These Garlic Mashed Potatoes are super easy to make, vegan, and the ultimate comfort for the whole family. I make these for lunch or dinner, and they will certainly be on my holiday table for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Do the same and wow everyone – these are seriously the best.
Trust me, even the pickiest kids will love this 30 minute meal. It is naturally vegan and no one could ever tell.
Neither taste nor texture is any different to a traditional mashed potatoes recipe.
The secret is to use olive oil, vegan butter, and oat milk to make this extra creamy and rich. Try and you will agree that these taste better than any other garlic mashed potatoes recipe.
Easy comfort food recipes are always my thing.
Especially now that we are getting towards fall and winter, I am craving more of the kind of my Cream Corn Casserole, the Ranch Style Beans, or my Stir Fry Noodles.

What you need for these vegan mashed potatoes
As always, you don’t need a ton of different ingredients to make this recipe. Keeping it simple and easy is my motto.
So this is all you need:
- Potatoes
- Vegan butter
- Olive oil
- Oat milk
- Minced garlic
To give the recipe a touch of extra flavor, you can add optionally:
- Garlic powder
- French Fried Onions for a crunchy garnish
Of course you also need salt and pepper.
How to make garlic mashed potatoes
First peel and wash your potatoes. Cover them in a large pot with water and bring to a boil. Cook them for at least 20 minutes, then check if they are done. If not, extend cooking time.
When they are soft, rinse and add the potatoes back to the same pot. Use a potato masher to pre-mash. Add garlic, olive oil, oat milk, and vegan butter. Season with salt and pepper, plus the optional garlic powder. Mash finely with a potato masher, or alternatively use a hand blender.
Serve on plates or bowls. This is a great side dish, main, and perfect for meal prep. It reheats beautifully for lunch or dinner. I love how amazingly good these are with some caramelized or French fried onions on top.
Variations and tips
Olive oil garlic mashed potatoes: skip the vegan butter, oat milk and simply use just olive oil.
Roasted garlic mashed potatoes: simply put the garlic on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and roast at 425°F for 20 minutes.
If you’re into a more rustic dish which is even more hearty don’t peel the potatoes. Finally use red potatoes for more variation.

Hi Florian :) I make garlic mashed potatoes very similar to your recipe. I add the garlic cloves to the potatoes and the robust garlic flavour gets cooked right into the potatoes.
