Best potatoes

Don’t fool around with potatoes, use the best for home fries. I can tell after I tested this on and off, that starchy russet potatoes are the clear winner. These give the final result an amazing texture, but fingerlings and red potatoes will work as well. Know that the texture and result won’t be exactly the same, but still enjoyable.

What’s in this country potatoes seasoning

Garlic powder — I keep it really simple und use powder. No need to peel or chop fresh cloves.

Onion powder — this gives this recipe a more well rounded flavor.

Smoked paprika is such an great spice as it adds a deep smoky flavor which compliments the other seasonings so well.

Precooked potato cubes are given to a frying pan with seasoning given over it.

What you need for this country potatoes recipe

Besides the seasonings, you of course need potatoes to make Country Potatoes. Starchy ones are best, because you will get an extra crispy result. Other potatoes will work, but you can definitely expect a different result.

Vegetable oil  — I like to use a neutral vegetable oil such as canola or sunflower oil.

How to make Country Potatoes in two steps

First clean your potatoes and cut them into quarters. Transfer them to a pot with salted water seasoning. Bring to boil and then cook the cubes. This will take 5 minutes. Alternatively you can use a steamer basket and steam them for around 6 minutes in the microwave. In both cases, let the potatoes cool down.

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet. When the oil is hot, add potato cubes and fry them until nicely browned, which will take 4 minutes. Now add garlic and onion powder, as well as smoked paprika. Mix all and fry for another 5 minutes. Finally, add salt and pepper, remove from heat and enjoy.

These Country Potatoes are best fresh. I wouldn’t freeze them or reheat them again. Instead you can make them for meal prep, cook or steam them. Taste great made with leftover potatoes, yum.

Tips and tricks

Don’t skip precooking the potatoes. This step is important, because you want to remove the starch. If you put the potatoes raw in the skillet they won’t cook, get soft instead of crispy.

Herbs: Adding parsley or chives or parsley is great.

I don’t recommend reheating for leftovers, but If you want to add 1 tbsp oil in a pan and cook them in the oil until hot.
