I can tell there isn’t anything more comforting than Salisbury Steak and I serve it all the time with Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

You can see and tell I really do love steaks and this Hamburger Steak recipe is no exception:

The Hamburger Steaks are so easy to make and so rich in flavor. You will feel like you eat in a amazing restaurant. You can have it alone or  serve with Steak Sauce and of course Steak Fries.

Last but not least the gravy is truly the star of the show. It is an onion gravy and you know it is seriously so good, because it has caramelized onions.

I use same to similar ingredients for the steak and gravy in my recipe and this makes everything even easier than you think.

What you need for this Hamburger Steaks Recipe

Vegan ground beef is the foundation for our steaks along with breadcrumbs, dairy free butter, olive oil. Yes both for an amazing result. The oil is here for cooking the steaks properly and the butter for an amazing flavor.

Dried parsley, garlic, and onion powder add a lot of flavor to the steaks, with soy sauce for a wonderful umami flavor.

Mustard and ketchup are typical hamburger ingredients. So you know these are meant for each other like butter and bread.

Bread crumbs: I use panko, which are a great binder.

As I said for the gravy, we use similar ingredients as in the steak, so I use onions, vegetable broth along with cornstarch and water to make a slurry to thicken everything a bit up.

Sugar gives all the savory ingredients a balance and a hit of sweetness. Balsamic vinegar this brings a delicious flavor into the gravy and really adds value in the final result – so good.

How to make Hamburger Steak

Prepare steaks

In a large bowl combine vegan ground beef, bread crumbs, garlic, onion powder, dried parsley, mustard, soy sauce, ketchup and a pinch of salt and pepper. Form 4 equally sized steaks and heat a pan with 1 Tbs butter and the oil.

Cook steaks for around 4 minutes, flip once in between. Remove from the pan but leave the grease, because here is what the flavor really sits.

Prepare cornstarch slurry

Into a small ball combine cornstarch and water, mix to form a slurry. Set aside.

Tips and tricks

Leftovers are great for 4 days.

To freeze: I would suggest after preparing that you freeze the steaks and gravy separately for best results. Remove steak from gravy and layer them into containers or Ziploc bags. Add gravy into bags or freezer containers as well. You can freeze for 3 months.

To reheat Hamburger Steaks: you can add gravy and steaks together in a pan on medium heat and cook until desired warmness is achieved.

Instead of parsley you can use thyme or sage.

Make sure to form 4 equal steaks to cook them properly. It is much easier than having different sizes.
