I think we can all agree everyone loves a sesame dressing, but it can be a bit tricky to get one. Sometimes it is sold out or really expensive.
I’m a strong believer you can make any salad good with just an amazing dressing like this Thousand Island Dressing, the Ranch Dressing, my Italian Dressing, Green Goddess Dressing, or my Catalina Dressing.
A great salad doesn’t need to be fancy in my opinion. Just take some green lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, corn or bell pepper and you are all set.
Why you want to make this Japanese sesame dressing
My Roasted Sesame Dressing is so easy and seriously fun to make, let me tell you:
Roasted sesame: you can’t beat the more than the amazing smell of roasted sesame seeds, so good.
Brown sugar: I know most recipes use white sugar, but I find brown sugar really transforms the dressing from great to gourmet.
Sesame oil: adds a great nutty flavor.
Vegan mayo: who doesn’t love mayo? It is always an amazing base for dressings – so creamy, rich and delicious.
What you need for this Roasted Sesame Dressing
You will need a pan for roasting sesame seeds and a mortar or small food processor. I prefer the mortar always.
Here is what you need:
- Vegan mayo
- Sesame seeds
- Tamari
- Vinegar
- Brown sugar
- Sesame oil
How to make Roasted Sesame Dressing
First heat your pan on medium heat. When hot, give the sesame seeds to it and roast them for around 3 minutes, until lightly browned and golden.
Next with the help of a mortar and pestle, grind your seeds until they are finely ground. Alternatively use a food processor and pulse a few times until you reach this consistency.
Finally combine all the ingredients like mayo, tamari, oil, sugar, vinegar in a bowl and combine until fully mixed.
Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for around 1 week.
Tips and tricks.
My best tips to make an even better result for the Roasted Sesame Dressing:
Use sesame oil not canola or olive oil, because canola is tasteless and sesame give just the right flavor. Olive will be too strong and dominant.
Sesame seeds: don’t use pre roasted sesame seeds, because roasting in a pan will always taste better and you can always adjust the taste from roasting to your own preference.
Brown sugar: this ingredient adds so much flavor, way more than white sugar. Once you’ve tried it, you can taste the difference.
